About

Shruti Kartikey

I’ve spent most of twelve years being the first designer somewhere — building the thing, and then building the team that builds the thing.

I started in craft — grids, kerning, colour mixed by eye — at Ogilvy & Mather, Vertiver and Ziffi, then learned at Craftsvilla that taste doesn’t scale but structure does. In 2017 I joined InterviewBit as designer number one: no team, no precedent, three products with one designer, and a coding-practice platform that reached about 1.2M monthly users. Being the first designer, it turns out, is mostly deciding what the company will never have to argue about again.

From 2019 I was the founding designer at Scaler and eventually its Head of Design. One product became a learning ecosystem of eleven surfaces — free learning was treated as a product rather than marketing, and became the largest of them at 2.6M monthly users on Scaler Topic. Design and research grew from one person to thirty-plus, and the work moved from artefacts to conditions: hiring, the craft bar, the research practice, and partnering with the founders on storytelling and fundraising. Now I’m independent and deliberately hands-on again — for Evaratus that meant identity, website and the front-end that put it in a browser; for Peaktalent, the dashboard behind a marketplace that connects skilled contributors with AI training work, designed brief-to-buildable in a week. Twelve years in, and back at the bottom of a learning curve on purpose.

How I work

Make it real early.

Ideas get clearer once there’s something to react to. Increasingly, that means code too.

Decide once, not every screen.

Systems are how a decision survives the person who made it.

Check taste against evidence.

Scale isn’t a bigger version of the same problem. At a million users every ambiguity becomes a support ticket.

Lead by conditions, not artefacts.

Good design survives beyond the screen it was designed for. After years of leading teams, making is still how I think.

What people I’ve worked with say

Away from screens

I paint. It started outside work hours and grew into a community of 80K+ on Instagram. It changed how I think about audience, iteration, and finishing things — a painting is done when you stop, and learning when to stop turned out to be a product skill too.

I read, too. What I’m working through is on Goodreads.
